I am pleased to inform you that I have attended A meeting with Forum of Election Management Bodies Of Souuth Asia (FEMBOSA) organised by Nepal IFES & submitted there 7 recommendations on inclusive electoral & political rights of persons with disabilities for south asia countries. This was a lovely & fruitful meeting regarding inclusion of PWDs.
Recognizing the increasing risks to the democratic and electoral rights of people with disabilities posed by climate change, organizations of people with disabilities from five South Asian countries (Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka) came together, facilitated by IFES, identified advocacy priorities highlighting the intersection of climate change, elections, and the rights of people with disabilities, and presented them in the form of recommendations to election management bodies who were in Kathmandu last week for the 12th FEMBoSA conference.
See what’s in the recommendations
Approximately, 16% of the global population is living with diverse disabilities, with over 300 million residing in South Asia (WHO, 2023). The majority of those in South Asia are excluded from political and electoral processes due to a multitude of complex barriers, which are exacerbated by the disproportionate impacts of climate change.
